Accountants for Charities

We understand that regular changes in charity accounting rules and guidelines, such as SORP 2026, on top of funding shortages and rising costs, place you under significant strain in running your charity.

Accounting requirements for charities are different to those for commercial companies, and we use our 40 years’ experience working with charities to provide advice in a jargon-free manner. We take the time to understand your charity's structure and goals, helping with everything from SORP-compliant accounts to independent examinations.

At DS Burge & Co, our charity accountants do the heavy lifting so that you can focus on your mission rather than drowning in paperwork. We keep you on top of your corporation tax returns and other reporting requirements, and help maximise tax relief through Gift Aid and other charity tax incentives.

Gift Aid and Other Tax Incentives for Charities

Gift Aid and Other Tax Incentives for Charities

There are tax reliefs/incentives that are exclusively available for charities:

  • Gift Aid - You can claim back 25p every time someone donates £1 to your charity. You must be registered with the Charity Commission (or another regulator if applicable) and recognised by HMRC.
  • Charitable Expenditure - Your charity does not pay tax on income and gains if it is used for a charitable purpose. You must still pay tax on dividends received from UK companies before 6 April 2016, profits from developing land or property, and purchases (special VAT rules for charities).
  • VAT for Charities - As a charity you can pay a reduced rate (5%) and a zero rate (0%) of VAT on goods and services that qualify for VAT relief.

What Is Charity SORP 2026?

A charity SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice) provides recommendations for accounting and reporting for charities. On 31 October 2025, SORP 2026 was released, replacing the existing SORP 2019 framework, and bringing changes that are effective for accounting periods that began on or after 1 January 2026. Some of the most significant changes include:

  • Three-Tier Reporting Structure - Charities are now grouped into tiers based on gross income. The tier that a charity sits in determines the level of reporting required to try and reduce the reporting burden on small charities whilst ensuring that larger charities maintain transparency.
  • Income Recognition - Clearer guidance on income recognition to differentiate between exchange and non-exchange transactions. This will have significant impacts on charities that receive grants, or donations with conditions.
  • Lease Accounting - Most leases must be recognised on the balance sheet, which may significantly impact reported assets and liabilities.

Our team of charity accountants are here to help you stay compliant with the new legislation and updates to the regulatory framework such as SORP 2026, get in touch with DS Burge & Co today.
